TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION
"Timber frame, post & beam, oak framing" are different terms used to describe a traditional heavy timber construction system. This method relies entirely on solid wood joinery, without the use of nails or steel reinforcements—100% wood craftsmanship.
It is based on a series of precise joints, assemblies, and time-honored techniques—from a simple mortise-and-tenon to complex five-piece intersections—that take into account the compression and tension forces within the structure.
The techniques used in timber frame construction have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. They are based on layout systems that follow the same traditional principles, although today’s craftsmen benefit from portable power tools that speed up fabrication without compromising quality.
Typically, timber frame buildings are designed by specialized carpenters or designers who, through experience, understand what works both aesthetically and structurally. Beams are often oversized, a defining feature of the system’s visual appeal and a key factor in ensuring strength and longevity.
