The Bellwether Awards in Education are national awards established by the public system of Community Colleges in the USA in 1995. It is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida and focuses on programs that other universities may find worthy of replication. The awards are awarded each year by Bellwether in three categories to universities that develop outstanding programs and innovative practices.
The Bellwether Award has been compared to the Heisman Football Award because it is judged and competitive, it is a prize awarded by its peers in community colleges, without cash prizes. It has also been called "the Oscars," because many institutions with programs that have won other awards apply for the Bellwether Award. Previous recipients of the Bellwether Prize have said that it has been a springboard for other kinds of recognition and / or funding given its great difficulty to be awarded
